9th May 2013 My Big Break... by WFTV Award-Winning Writer Jo Ho

I came into the industry cold, with no contacts or experience, hadn't even studied it at university.  I was in my early 20s, broke, stuck with a student loan and useless degree before I knew I wanted to work in showbiz.  Against the wishes of my entire family (including all those far flung ones in Hong Kong), I committed myself to learning about this business of show.

27th March 2013 Camera/Woman

Last week I interviewed filmmaker Karima Zoubir who directed the documentary Camera/Woman. The film was screening here in London as part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival - a great annual event highlighting everyday breaches of human rights through the medium of film.

20th March 2013 The Making of Miriam: A Short Film Crafted by WFTV Mentees

In January 2011, having been selected as 1 of twenty participants on the WFTV Mentoring Scheme that year, I arrived for the induction day. When I applied for the scheme, my sole thought had been of my mentor and how my interactions with that person could help me reach the next level of my career. Little did I know then that several of my fellow mentees would become, just two years later, my film collaborators (and great friends!). I was also delighted to discover that my mentor, Carol Wiseman, was an old-school filmmaker.

4th February 2013 The Expert Impostor

I have a confession to make.

My name is Jassel Majevadia, and I'm an impostor.

Or at least, I think I am.

In recent weeks I have encountered a strange phenomenon, both widespread and yet commonly unrecognised: impostor syndrome.

The panel was chaired by WFTV CEO Kate Kinninmont and featured the WFTV Mentoring Scheme producer, Nicola Lees, and mentees Esther Hegarty (2011) and Bridge Williams (2012-13).

11th January 2013 And the Award Goes to…. A Man

And the award goes to…. a man. There is rarely much suspense during Awards season, as the jostling and campaigning between crowd-pleasing “serious” films ensures the honoured few are not far from mainstream sensibilities.  Yet in the nominations, there is at least the possibility of diversity being recognised: a chance for the industry to give a nod in the right direction, that says, “OK, you are unlikely to win, but hey – good job!”

8th January 2013 9 Steps to Making SEO Work For You Now

22nd November 2012 BAFTA Debate: Sexism in TV: How Far Have We Come?

On 12th November 2012 I attended a debate hosted at BAFTA on Sexism in the UK’s TV industry. The debate was (I assume) created in response to claims made across various platforms during the recent ‘Savile’ crisis that the culture of sexism / sexual harassment that had existed during the 70s & 80s have improved today. This post is my report and thoughts on the points made during that debate.

26th September 2012 The Lack of Female Comics is No Joke

Guardian.co.uk / 26.09.2011
By Jane Martinson

Isn't this a great time to be a female comic? Just think of Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc back together again on the Great British Bake Off and, of course, Miranda Hart, with her own show on primetime TV and everything.

In the US, this season includes loads of shows with great female talent, including a new slot for Whitney Cummings, called Whitney so like Miranda we won't forget her name. Whitney's hero is Tina Fey. As she is mine.
