1-2-1 Clinic: Legal Advice with Tara Smith, Clintons

Film and television lawyer Tara Smith from Clintons’ specialist Film & TV team will be available for 1-2-1 legal consultations on Monday 19 April. These will be carried out via Zoom, or phone upon request.

Tara is an Associate in Clintons’ Film and TV Team. She advises production companies, financiers and film and television businesses on the development, production, financing and sales/exploitation of films, television, and other audio-visual content.

Prior to joining Clintons, she worked for a top five law firm in Ireland specialising in film, television, animation and documentary financing and production. In November 2020, Tara was awarded the Diploma in Arts, Entertainment and Media Law from The Law Society of Ireland. Tara dual qualified in 2017 as a Solicitor in Ireland and in England and Wales.

These Legal Clinics will offer focussed advice on development, financing and exploitation:

Development: Do you have a project with a budget of more than £250k that you’ve been able to advance in lockdown and now need reliable legal advice on? How do you obtain and protect the rights? How do you secure the key talent? What are the key terms in collaboration and co-production agreements? If you don’t get this right at an early stage, it can be complex to unpick later on.

Financing: Every project needs investors and financiers. What are the key differences between a loan and investment agreement? What are the key forms of security when investing or accepting investment from third parties?

Exploitation: Finished content is now at a premium. Do you need to consider the evolving exploitation landscape? What are the key differences when negotiating with streamers? How will your marketing and exploitation strategies change in this new environment?

Tara is available to help you get these key points right. The aim of the Legal 1-2-1 surgeries is to provide useful pointers but cannot be a substitute for formal legal advice following proper review and consideration of the facts and any relevant documents and information.
