About the Event
Film journalist Helen O’Hara joins WFTV’s Northern Ireland Mentoring Producer Sarah McCaffrey in conversation to discuss her latest book: Women vs Hollywood: The Fall and Rise of Women in Film.
We’ll find out what compelled Helen to bring together the stories of the incredible women who were pioneers in the industry but written out of film history. Helen examines women's roles - both in front of and behind the camera - since the birth of Hollywood, how those roles are reflected within wider society and her thoughts on achieving gender equality in both the industry and more broadly.
Helen O’Hara has been working as a film journalist for over fifteen years, after qualifying as a barrister and immediately getting bored. She started her film writing career on the staff of Empire, the world’s biggest film magazine, and remains their editor-at-large and co-host of the Empire podcast, where she can be found weekly singing the praises of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and complaining about La La Land. She is also an author and freelance writer. Northern Irish born, O’Hara now lives in London, splitting her time between cinemas, libraries and coffee shops.
Host, Sarah McCaffrey is the Mentoring Producer for the WFTV Mentor Scheme in Northern Ireland, and also works within the Business Affairs team at BBC Children’s. Until 2017 she was the Senior Channel Management Executive at ITV in Northern Ireland (UTV) and has a variety of production and business affairs experience in drama, digital, animation and children’s content.
