About the Event
In this event, Jackie Okwera will be in conversation with Gwawr Lloyd, Drama Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, discussing the current landscape of scripted drama in TV, her thoughts on what makes a great show and sharing insights on how to get a project commissioned.
Gwawr’s recent commissions include comedy series Chivalry written by Sarah Solemani and Steve Coogan, Somewhere Boy written by Pete Jackson and psychological thriller Light in the Hall, written by Regina Moriarty.
Gwawr Lloyd, Drama Commissioning Editor, Channel 4
Gwawr Lloyd is Drama Commissioning Editor at Channel 4. Gwawr works across a wide range of Channel 4 dramas and co-productions – most recently Chivalry and Light in the Hall. Gwawr and the team at C4 Drama’s aim is to commission and broadcast the most talked-about and original drama in the UK.
Previously Drama Commissioner at S4C where she commissioned Y Gwyll/Hinterland, Hidden and Un Bore Mercher/Keeping Faith. Prior to this she was producer at the BBC.
Gwawr is based in the C4 Bristol Hub and lives in Cardiff.
Jackie Okwera
Jackie Okwera is currently the lead writer and exec producer of a period drama in development at Channel 4. She recently wrote an episode and was a supervising producer of an upcoming Bad Robotseries for HBO Max, which led to her joining the Writers Guild of America in 2021.
Jackie has several original projects in development and has worked in writers’ rooms for HBO Max, Netflix, Apple TV+, Sky and Channel 4. Furthermore, she was selected as one of the Edinburgh TV festival’s ‘Ones to Watch’ in 2021 and is currently a mentee on the Women in Film and TV Mentoring Scheme.
Before her screenwriting career took off, Jackie spent over a decade in TV/film development. She cut her teeth in continuing drama before moving to various leading UK indies, where she worked with writers such as Jed Mercurio, Danny Brocklehurst and Harlan Coben. Her success culminated in a BAFTA membership in 2018.
