About the Event

Reframed: Marilyn Monroe is a four-part CNN Original Series produced by Raw that revisits the extraordinary story of a girl who sprang from nowhere to become the most famous woman in the world. Narrated by Golden Globe-winning actress Jessica Chastain, it reveals a complex, fascinating woman who took on powerbrokers in Hollywood and courageously challenged the misogyny of 1950’s America, all while beating the odds to succeed in a man’s world.

We will be joined by Executive Producer and Showrunner Sam Starbuck and Directors Karen McGann and Grace Chapman, who will be in conversation with film journalist Helen O’Hara to discuss working with an all-female editorial team to uncover themes of feminism, sexuality and power in Monroe’s life, and the making of this new docuseries from idea to commission and production.

Attendees will also be offered the option to select a ticket to view an episode of Reframed: Marilyn Monroe. To receive a screening link, you must book a ticket by 10am on Friday 11 March.

Speakers

Sam Starbuck

Executive Producer Sam Starbuck has delivered more than 100 hours of high-end documentary films, series and specials for US and UK broadcasters in a career spanning 25 years. Since joining Raw in 2020, as well as Reframed: Marilyn Monroe for CNN Originals, she has overseen the Netflix featuredoc Memories of a Murderer: the Nilsen Tapes and the recent Netflix global chart-topping documentary film The Tinder Swindler.

Grace Chapman

Grace came to work on Marilyn: Reframed having previously teamed-up with Exec Sam Starbuck on the Realscreen-nominated doc Escape from the Towers. Much of her career has been spent working on docs and specialist factual films that reassess pivotal moments and attitudes in our recent history, such as Is Love Racist which probed whether dating trends can expose racial bias; or The Marching Season which scratched below the glittery surface of contemporary Pride marches to explore homophobia in Eastern Europe. Thus, the opportunity to look at Marilyn afresh from a feminist perspective was extremely inviting and illuminating! Most recently Grace was Series Director on Positive, Sky Documentaries 3-part series on the story of HIV in the UK; and she’s currently working on a pair of films for October’s upcoming CNN series, First Ladies.

Karen McGann

Karen McGann is a BAFTA and Emmy nominated series director and director/producer based in London. Over the past 15 years she's made single films and series for UK broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky Arts, as well as American streaming services Disney + and HBO Max. Credits include What Makes a Woman for Channel 4 with Munroe Bergdorf, Snowfall for HBO Max, narrated by Cillian Murphy and The World According to Jeff Goldblum for Nat Geo and Disney Plus.

Host

Helen O’Hara

Helen O’Hara has been working as a film journalist for over fifteen years, after qualifying as a barrister and immediately getting bored. She started her film writing career on the staff of Empire, the world’s biggest film magazine, and remains their editor-at-large and co-host of the Empire podcast, where she can be found weekly singing the praises of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and complaining about La La Land. She is also a freelance writer and author of books including Women Vs Hollywood: The Fall And Rise Of Women In Film (Robinson, 2021).
