Writers’ Group: 4Stories and On the Edge, in conversation with Ben Bickerton, Executive Producer

For this month’s writers’ group, host Christina Pickworth will be in conversation with Ben Bickerton, executive producer of the award-winning anthology On the Edge, written and directed by new talent.

In this session Ben Bickerton from BlackLight will be talking about 4Stories, Channel 4’s new talent initiative which offers six first time writers and directors the opportunity to work with experienced producers at BlackLight television to create the On the Edge anthology. This year, series two of On the Edge took home Best Emerging Talent at BAFTA Cymru and Best New Writer at the Edinburgh TV awards.

Ben will be speaking about how things have worked for the previous rounds of the initiative, including submissions, selection, and how the process works from script to screen. Members are encouraged to watch the latest series (available now on All4) in advance of the session. This will be an invaluable insight into the inner workings of this initiative for new talent and a scheme for writers and directors to keep on their radar.

Ben Bickerton formed BlackLight with Philip Trethowan in 2017. It is part of the Banijay Media Group, the world’s largest independent content creation group for television and multimedia platforms.  Ben began his career at Company Pictures where he script edited the Channel 4 legal series, North Square. He then worked at BBC drama for ten years script editing and producing a number of popular and critically acclaimed shows. In 2016 he produced the multi award winning film Ellen, made entirely by new talent. BlackLight have just completed making series 3 of their award-winning Channel 4 serial, On The Edge, also written and directed entirely by new talent. The third series is available to watch on All4.

Attending participants will not be visible to others and will be muted throughout the session. After the talk, there will be an opportunity for audience members to ask their questions to the panel by using the Q&A feature.
