Writers’ Group: In Conversation with Malak El-Gonemy, Drama Development Executive at FilmNation Entertainment

For May’s Writers’ Group host Christina Pickworth was in conversation with Malak El-Gonemy, Drama Development Executive at FilmNation Entertainment, talking about TV drama development, moving over from non-scripted to scripted, as well as Malak’s new initiative Broadcasting Marginalised Voices, a newsletter in which she facilitates creative conversations with talent from under-represented groups within the British TV and film industry.


Malak El-Gonemy is a British-Egyptian TV Producer based in London. She grew up in Manchester and entered the TV industry in 2016 as a member of the production team on Blue Peter. Since then, she has worked across development, factual entertainment, and scripted drama and comedy. She is currently a Development Executive at FilmNation. She started her newsletter, Broadcasting Marginalised Voices, to provide a platform for talent from underrepresented groups within the industry, offering insights into the journeys of writers, actors, directors, producers and members of crew.

Working with Intimacy Coordinators with Loop Talent

In this session Intimacy Coordinators Haley Muraleedharan, Rufai Ajala and Abigail Kessel discussed the role of an intimacy coordinator and how it works with departments across production at all stages of a shoot to support artists and crew. 

Hosted by Lucy Price, Founder and Managing Director of Loop Talent, a HOD Agency and Crew Diary Service, the panel discussed everything from how their backgrounds informs their work as intimacy coordinators to the process on set and adapting working styles to different directors.


This session is for all members working across production and with talent who would like to learn how their departments can work with intimacy coordinators and to gather recommended guidance to create a safer process for shooting scenes with intimacy.

Meet the Producer: Documentaries & Drama with Anam Abbas

In this Meet the Producer session, our host and fellow producer Michelle Stein was in conversation with documentary filmmaker and drama film producer, Anam Abbas


Michelle and Anam discussed Anam’s career path, along with any current trends she’s noticing within the industry, and insights on funding and developing projects. They also discussed the making of In Flames and Anam's role as producer throughout production. 

Lost Boys & Fairies: The Making of the Series with Duck Soup Films

Watch back this conversation with the female founders of Duck Soup Films, the Leeds based indie production company behind Lost Boys & Fairies, and find out their journey from setting up an indie to their first BBC One commission.

Writers’ Group: In Conversation with writer Suhayla El-Bushra

Hosted by Christina Pickworth, Suhayla shared her journey in the industry so far, experience writing for TV dramas Hollyoaks, Becoming Elizabeth and Ackley Bridge as well as her upcoming feature film Brides which is currently in post-production.

 

Suhayla offered insight to writing for different mediums and her process when approaching projects.

The FAST Boom with Laura Taylor-Williams and Kate Cook

FAST TV Channels have become the industry buzzword over the last few years. In this session, Laura Taylor-Williams and Kate Cook from Aardman will take you through what Free Ad Supported TV channels (FAST) are, their rise in the distribution landscape and why, the platform players and differences in international markets and pointers for companies considering launching their own FAST Channel.


In addition, flag potential considerations for those outside of distribution with the advent of new rights to help content owners, producers and composers. Finally, they gave a snapshot of Aardman’s own FAST channel that has recently launched in the USA Shaun the Sheep & Friends.

Taking the Fear out of Feedback with Camilla Wells

Following on from her communicating with confidence session, coach Camilla Wells, this time focusing on feedback. 
 

Most of us can improve when it comes to feedback - whether delivering or receiving it well. In this session, she shared coaching tips and techniques based on the Assertiveness model with example scenarios to bring the learning to life.

Writers’ Group: In Conversation with Writer/Director Weronika Tofilska

For August's writers’ group, we were joined by writer and director Weronika Tofilska.​

 

In conversation with host Christina Pickworth, Weronika discussed her journey in the industry and career to date and work on recent projects as well as sharing insight to her creative process and how she balances the roles of writer and director across her portfolio of work. Weronika’s most recent credits include co-writing Rose Glass’s feature Love Lies Bleeding and directing episodes 1-4 of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer.

 

GenAI in Productions: Powering Creativity with Legal Smarts
