5 things to embrace with the changing landscape of Film Festivals we learnt from Katie McCullough.

In June, we got to hear from Katie McCullough, the founder of Festival Formula about the global film festival circuit and how it has adapted in response to the global pandemic social distancing rules. With over a decade of experience and knowledge, Festival Formula helps filmmakers use festivals to build their profile within the film industry.


Film festivals for 2020 have had to rapidly adapt from being physical and in-person events to being hosted online with the government enforced lockdowns being implemented worldwide. The nature of the sudden lockdowns meant most festivals had to be cancelled, rescheduled or to go online.

Bringing film festivals to an online platform brings unfamiliar territory for filmmakers navigating decisions on submitting films and sharing their work online.

Katie McCullough is the founder of Festival Formula Ltd, a consultancy company focusing on filmmakers covering festival strategy. Her background is in writing with a BA from Bournemouth Media School in Scriptwriting for Film & TV as well as being a graduate of the Royal Court London’s prolific writing group. With over a decade and counting of experience handling festival strategies she’s hosted workshops and masterclasses for a broad range of audiences including: Encounters Film Festival, Independent Cinema Office, Cork Film Festival, Aesthetica, BFI Flare, Heartland Film Festival, Raindance, Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival, Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival and more. She’s also been quoted in The Hollywood Reporter, Broadcast and Screen Daily as a leading industry voice on Festivals.
